fdic deposit history

This visualization shows the dynamic fluctuation in total assets (x), total deposits (y) and size (radius) of 25 major banks over the last decade. Major focus is on Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Citibank who, by 2011, come to dominate the banking world. You'll notice that two banks disappear from the graph. In 2008, Washington Mutual becomes one of the biggest bank failures in history, eventually being bought by JPMorgan Chase for $1.9B. In the same year, Wells Fargo aquires Wachovia for $15B. All in the wake of the Financial Crisis.
